Mill scale is a surface layer of iron oxide form on steel billets during hot rolling. Currently this is a waste material and constitutes nearly two percent of the yearly output from CHICO. The current research shows that this waste material could be recycled into useful products. One of them is a feed material to a cupola furnace to produce pig iron; and the other is an abrasive material for metal polishing. The processing and heat treatments utilized for these products are discussed in this paper. Further research is in progress. |
